A time of reflection, celebration, and anticipation of a New Year filled with opportunities, possibilities, and surprises

On behalf of the staff of Avior Executive Search, I want to wish you a joyous holiday and a peaceful and prosperous 2023.

As 2022 comes to an end, I look back and see that it certainly has been a year filled with a great deal of opportunity and transformation in the wealth management arena. From a returns standpoint, the year presented great challenges. Obviously, we all know the market was down; steep global inflation and the ongoing situation in Ukraine did not help one bit. However, in spite of these challenges, 2022 proved to be the “year of the employee”, demonstrating a high number of openings, increased demand for talented candidates, and a steep rise in compensation to attract and retain them.

To those in leadership, I encourage you carefully assess what the value of your staff is in the market, which continues to escalate. Firms have become proactive in retaining their talent by not waiting for a yearly review process and, additionally, offering flexible works schedules. This proactive approach, coupled with remote options as another tool used in employee retention, have become absolute necessities required to survive and thrive.

Demand for those who generate revenue continues to top the list of clients’ requirements. Middle management and leadership positions still are on the decline, as the RIA and family office industry demonstrate very flat operating structures. Large banks, like JP Morgan, have been on huge hiring sprees this year and will continue this trend in 2023. However, in my experience, when large firms go on these sprees, they are historically followed by layoffs…just a word to the wise.

As we enter 2023, I would like to offer some advice:
For the smaller and medium-sized firms who struggle to attract and retain the talent you need, I encourage you to “step up or step off”. By this, I mean that you need to be acutely aware of the market trends as far as compensation, as well as what accommodations you must be prepared to make in order to hire and maintain quality candidates.

For the large banks and wire houses, please know that there will be an enormous amount of movement. Those that crave the security of big brand names and the huge resources they offer will be moving in. Conversely, those who have been working for the big brands and grown weary of the bureaucracy within these firms will be moving out.

For the RIA & Multi-Family office industry, while you directly benefit from the changes within large wire house and bank institutions,(i.e., Morgan Stanley raising minimums to 5M), be aware that there are too many of you; consolidation will continue to be a common reality as private equity firms love to infringe on your space.

In closing, I remind you that I am always available to answer any questions. I also welcome your comments, thought and feedback. As I finish my 32nd year in the search industry, I want to thank everyone who has allowed me the privilege to be around for year 33. Best wishes for a wonderful holiday season and a Happy New Year!

God bless you all…

Alan Goldstein, Founder and President
