Avior Executive Search Thoughts, Comments,
Most Pressing Search Assignments, and Happenings
On behalf of the Avior Executive Search team, I want to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving! For many of us, this will be the first time in 3 years that we can get together with friends and families without standing 6 feet apart and wearing surgical masks.
Let’s take a look at the current state of our industry. From the employer side of the wealth management field, the larger banks seem to have slowed down as far as hiring, mainly due to year-end reviews and budget determinations. Additionally, many bankers are waiting for their bonuses, which are paid out primarily during the first quarter of the new year. From the larger, wirehouse side, the
latest development is the recent announcement from Morgan Stanley instituting a 5M minimum account size which doubles the current minimum of 2.5M. On the surface this might seem alarming; however, other large firms including Merrill Lynch and UBS already instituted this policy and many people in the industry have asked why it took so long for Morgan to follow suit. You can read more about this topic in the Citywire article, for which I was interviewed last week.
Regarding the RIA and independent spaces, prior to the Morgan Stanley announcement the largest percentage of movement of wirehouse advisors over the past few years have NOT been to other wirehouses but, in fact, to independents and RIA’s. Among the many reasons for these moves are higher payouts, less bureaucracy, equity and lower minimums. I am contacted almost daily by new firms from other countries seeking to make these moves. I expect a lot of consolidation to continue as well.
As always, I encourage your feedback and my staff and I are always available to speak regarding how we can help your firm identify the executive talent you need. We are also happy to discuss how we can help you determine the next step in your career. It continues to be our privilege to be trusted advisors within this ever-changing wealth management world.
